Why Does Dyngus Day Change Every Year?
Dyngus Day is always the Monday after Easter — and Easter moves because it follows the moon. The rule, set in 325 AD at the Council of Nicaea, is: Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox (March 21).
Since the moon's 29.5-day cycle doesn't align with our 365-day calendar, the "Paschal Full Moon" lands on a different date each year — and Easter shifts with it. That's why Dyngus Day can fall as early as March 23 or as late as April 26.
The church uses a mathematical table called the Metonic cycle (a 19-year lunar pattern discovered by the ancient Greeks) to calculate the date years in advance — which is how we can tell you exactly when Dyngus Day falls through 2036 and beyond. Na Zdrowie! 🍺
